You don’t have to be a great writer to write great web content. A few simple tricks can help you improve your web content and make it more useful to your visitor.
Know your audience
Your visitors are busy. They are on your site for information or to complete a task.
Give them the information they need quickly and painlessly. Great web content will help them complete their task.
Who are your visitors? What are they here for? Does your content give them the information they need? Does it help them complete the task they came to do?
Write a clear but catchy title
Your title needs to clearly say what the content is about and will catch your readers’ attention.
It should be:
specific
unique
short.
A well-written title will also show up in search results.
Writing a good title is not easy and you may want to write the title after you have finished the rest of the page.
Keep your writing simple
Your readers are in a hurry. Keep your writing as simple as you can.
Put your key points first and follow with supporting points. Help your readers quickly find the information they need to complete their task.
Don’t bury information in a chunk of text or at the bottom of the page.
Remember the screen is hard to read. You should:
use everyday words
use short sentences
use short paragraphs
Readers naturally scan online text so make your writing easier by using tools such as:
headings
sub-headings
dot points.
Add images or other media
Images and videos can help you communicate more effectively. But only add them when they are relevant to your content.
Make sure you have the right to use images and are not breaching copyright.
Include a call to action
What do you want your visitors to do? What action do you want them to take?
Help your visitor contact you, sign up to your newsletter or buy a product.
Linking to useful content to help them if they are on the wrong page or need different information.
